At-Taubah 9:29
قَٰتِلُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَلَا بِٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْءَاخِرِ وَلَا يُحَرِّمُونَ مَا حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ وَلَا يَدِينُونَ دِينَ ٱلْحَقِّ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ حَتَّىٰ يُعْطُوا۟ ٱلْجِزْيَةَ عَن يَدٍ وَهُمْ صَٰغِرُونَ
English - Sahih International
Fight against those who do not believe in Allāh or in the Last Day and who do not consider unlawful what Allāh and His Messenger have made unlawful and who do not adopt the religion of truth [i.e., Islām] from those who were given the Scripture - [fight] until they give the jizyah[1] willingly while they are humbled.

Muslims have been ordered by Allah to establish His authority upon the earth. To enforce his Shariah.
This can only be done through fighting as no disbeliever will simply leave you alone to govern yourselves or them.
With regards to these disbelievers, even after fighting and gaining victory over them, we cannot force them to be Muslim, but rather we can force them to abide by the laws of Allah.
One of those laws is the Jizyah: a tax payable by disbelievers who have chosen not accept Islam, and have contracted with the Muslims not to fight them.
It is important to note the last part of the ayah: 'willingly, while they are humbled'.
The word 'humbled', which was chosen by this translator, is a very mild way of putting it. It could mean, 'while they are made small' i.e humiliated.
This tax, although small, is meant to humiliate them until they submit to, and accept Islam.
Today, however, most of us Muslims are happy to live among them, humiliated without the slightest realization, while our children slowly lose their Islamic identity.
On top of that, you are paying exorbitant taxes, while they live off your wealth and you are a slave to their system.
This system is neither beneficial for your dunyah nor your aakhirah.
Allah has given you the road to honor and power, in return for paradise and you ignore it, only to enjoy this short temporary life.
